X-Quadrat- X-Quadrat 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1982, german, minimal synth, NDW, post-punk, x-quadrat on September 2, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Almost forgot I had this one kicking around. Thanks to bx59cppw for the nudge! This is a classic German 12”, released in 1982. Four tracks of synth weirdness here. Post-punk rhythms, fast minimal synth arpeggiations, and a very NDW approach to things, all wrapped up in four short, but incredibly sweet tracks. The Tonträger 58 Hagen label also released the Kein Mensch 7”, a similarly great release.

Not much more to be said about this one, so let’s get to the good stuff:

Profil- Profil LP + Bonus

Posted in 1980s, 1981, 1982, 1983, german, NDW, post-punk on June 8, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a handful of posts to get you through the week. First up, we have the lone LP (complete with bonus cuts) from German NDW band Profil. NDW isn’t usually my standard fare, but some of these tracks are certainly winners, including the first two tracks, and the majority of the bonus material. Expect some jerky,synth-driven rhythms, some perfect for the dancefloor while others a little more spastic, but entertaining all the same.

Not much else I can tell you about the band. According to discogs, they were a five piece outfit, and released a handful of singles on Welt-Rekord (owned by Peter Hein of Fehlfarben and also responsible for some key Grauzone releases).

Essentially, the LP alone consisted of 10 tracks, many of which were scattered across their earlier singles. Included in this upload, however, is the remaining b-sides from the debut Beruhren 12” (1981) and the band’s final release, the Leb Wohl Mein Schatz 12” (1983). Looks to be a complete discography, minus the shorter edit of “Leb Wohl Mein Schatz,” but including the Dub Mix not found on the previous Mutant Sounds post. Enjoy!

Profil- Profil LP + Bonus
1. Berühren
2. 1964
3. Schwimmen Im Geld
4. Regennacht
5. So Kühl
6. Ich Liebe Dich
7. In Form
8. C’Est La Vie
9. Lieber Gott
10. Toscana
11. Berühren (Long Version)
12. Immer Mehr
13. Leb Wohl Mein Schatz (Long Version)
14. Leb Wohl Mein Schatz (Dub Version)
15. Du Lügst

Tracks 1-10 from Profil LP (1982)
Tracks 11 and 12 from Berühren 12” (1981)
Tracks 13 and 14 from Leb Wohl Mein Schatz 12” (1983)
Track 15 from Leb Wohl Mein Schatz 7” (1983)

Belfegore- A Dog is Born LP

Posted in 1980s, 1983, Belfegore, german, NDW, new wave, post-punk, synth on January 23, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a classic German post-punk record, one of the highlights of the NDW movement that swept the country throughout the 1980s. Combing dark synths, aggressive guitars, experimental tendencies, and deep grooves, this record has it all.

Formed in 1982, the members of Belfegore had their roots in equally stellar projects, including Nichts and Die Krupps. This record was the first of two released by the band. Their second record, released on Elektra, earned a bit more attention and exposure, while this first record was self funded and released by local independent label Pure Freude, also responsible for S.Y.P.H. and a handful of Mekons releases. Their second (self-titled) record also featured the hit “All That I Wanted,” which earned sporadic airplay on MTv and VH1.

The band opened up for U2’s Unforgettable Fire European tour in 1985, shifting members and splitting up soon after. Vocalist Meikel Clauss would leave the music business entirely, practicing medicine.

Here’s the information for the band’s debut record, released in 1983.

Christof Glowalla- Complete Works LP

Posted in 1980s, Christof Glowalla, german, minimal, NDW, synth, wave on March 5, 2008 by Frankie Teardrop

I am frustratingly hard-pressed to find a sufficient amount of information about today’s artist, Christof Glowalla, a minimal synth/NDW outfit from Germany. I’m even having difficulty pinning down a proper image of the act, aside from various sketches in this vein. Though seemingly a one man outfit, the ‘official’ myspace page clues in on a few other collaborators, though their roles are undisclosed. Certain other records indicate one lone release, a 1980 7” single limited to 1000 copies, but I’ve unearthed and uploaded a one disc collection of completed works, which include a handful of other tracks recorded throughout the 1980s, which most likely appeared on other under-the-radar 7” singles.

That all said, if anyone has any further information on Christof, past OR present, please send it my way. Otherwise, without any further delay, the details:

Alexander Von Borsig

Posted in alexander von borsig, Einstürzende Neubauten, experimental, industrial, NDW, p1/e on October 17, 2007 by Frankie Teardrop

Though I’ve posted material featuring today’s artist’s contributions, I’ve yet to post his own material, so without any further adieu, today’s post features German jack-of-all-trades, Alexander Von Borsig.

Known best for his contributions to Einstürzende Neubauten, P1/E, Crime + the City Solution, and most recently the Tiger Lillies, Alexander Von Borsig (currently active as Alexander Hacke) began making music at the tender age of 13. Under several monikers, he released homemade cassette tape and single recordings of his own material, as well as work with Christiane F. in Sentimentale Jugend. Soon after these tapes were released, he would join as guitarist of experimental act Einstürzende Neubauten (at age 15), and he remains with the band to this day, switching to bass guitar most recently.

I’ve uploaded three tracks for you folks today, the first a single A-side for the song ‘Hiroshima,’ and the second, the entire ‘Japanisch’ single. Enjoy!

Though there are several clips of Alexander Hacke performing with his other outfits, I can’t seem to find anything on his earlier material for web viewing- though Einstürzende Neubauten’s Liebeslieder dvd features a live piano performance of ‘Hiroshima,’ and is available on netflix for any curious parties.

Grauzone

Posted in 1980s, german, grauzone, minimal, NDW, swiss, synth, wave on September 21, 2007 by Frankie Teardrop

A request fulfilled! A quick reminder to chime up in the comments if you’d like to see a specific band featured- whether you’re involved, a fan, or trying to get ahold of more material or information.

That said, today’s band is Grauzone, a Swiss wave band who released but a few singles and one LP before disbanding. The band was the brainchild of multilingual singer Stephen Eicher and formed in 1978 along with his brother Martin, G.T. on bass, Claudine Chirac on sax, and Marco Repetto on drums. Though of Swiss origin, the majority of Grauzone’s songs were sung in German, breaking into a budding synth movement with their mild hit ‘Eisbär’ in 1981.

Soon after, their self titled full-length was released and Grauzone disbanded. However, Stephen’s interest in French music sparked a successful solo career as an ever changing musician, his future (and current) work covering a broad range of genres.

I’ve uploaded a duo of tracks for your enjoyment. The first is ‘Eisbär,’ their initial buzz single (which has since been covered prominently by both the Dresdon Dolls AND Nouvelle Vague) and the second hails from Die Sunrise Tapes, a pressed to CD collection of Grauzone’s work released in 1998.

Die Sunrise Tapes seems to be the only available and in-print CD available from Grauzone, though their vinyl is relatively easy to find on Ebay. For a link to nab Die Sunrise Tapes online, click below:
