Love Club- Lime Twigs and Treachery CD

Posted in 1980s, 1990, alternative, darkwave, goth, goth-rock, love club, san francisco on November 10, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s one I’ve had in my possession for some time now, donated by a friend a few years back. It’s been a while since I’ve thought about it, but after recovering from a major harddrive failure, I’ve since revisited this record with fond appreciation.

What we have here is a female fronted goth band from San Francisco, very much akin to the likes of Sunshine Blind, another US-based band who followed shortly after. This is their only album, released in 1990 on Popular Metaphysics, which was branded by MCA records, whose primary interest was metal at the time. Chances are that the band caught the label’s attention but didn’t perform as expected, as there are many cheap copies of this CD floating out there (and a wikipedia page!) but no audio to back it up. I’ve seen some requests for it out there in the ether, so about time this album is heard in full.

I must warn you: the second half of this album may be a little too Tori Amos-esque for some readers, but the first half just slays. Hard hitting tracks like “One Last Kiss” and “Holding Heaven’s Hand” should feel right at home for any late 80s darkwave collection, and are worth the price of admission alone. I feel like this album would have been more commercially successful if it were released three or four years later, when the alternative explosion was well underway with darker undercurrents. Don’t let the A word scare you off though, as you may find yourself surprised by the strength of the first few tracks.

Twenty Four Hour World- Twenty Four Hour World K7

Posted in 1980s, 1986, coldwave, deathrock, goth, goth-rock, post-punk, US on October 19, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a rare US cassette for all you goth and post-punk lovers out there. Released in 1986, this is the only known offering from Twenty Four Hour World. Great gloomy sounds perfect for a rainy day, and very reminiscent of Joy Division and early Modern English with a little bit of nasty deathrock mixed in for good measure. Really chaotic, visceral stuff here, not for the faint of heart!

Sunshot- Caughtintheactofenjoyingourselves LP

Posted in 1990s, 1992, goth, goth-rock, shoegaze, sunshot on June 7, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Going to dip into the 1990s for a little bit here. Don’t be scared, gentle readers, it’s all going to be ok.

The 1990s may have been the breeding ground for a lot of awful, awful music (and a lot of stuff I can’t quite let go, considering it was the decade in which I spent my adolescence), but there are some excellent gems to be found, even if they’re more few and far between. A few that ring a bell are Derriere Le Miroir, Sunshine Blind, and the incredible Requiem In White, all worth a peek for those unfamiliar.

I have three posts lined up, all from the 1990s. One is a coldwave classic (we’ll get to that one very soon, I promise) and the other two flirt a bit more with shoegaze, by far the best genre to come out of the decade. Today’s band has already been featured on the excellent Return to the East blog, and here’s their full length LP from 1992, a continuation of some of the great sounds heard on the EPs. Quite a few of the tracks from those EPs also appear here, alongside a few other gems. Touchstones, as previously mentioned, include The Young Gods, Sisters of Mercy, and Curve. I can’t get enough of this record and I hope you all enjoy the slight change of pace.

Opéra De Nuit- Opéra De Nuit LP (Revisited)

Posted in 1988, coldwave, french, goth-rock, minimal synth, new wave, opera de nuit, synth on June 2, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Another “looking back” entry. Re-ripped and cleaned up this particular French gem as well, vastly improved sound quality and fidelity to be found within! A few clicks and pops of course, but shouldn’t be too distracting and should serve as a definite improvement over the previous versions.

What else can I say about this record that hasn’t already been said before? Absolute masterpiece, every track here is a winner. I might go so far as to say it’s my favorite French LP, which is an awfully bold statement for a blog originally focused on the coldwave/touching pop movement.

I also have a copy of the scarce Amour Noir 12” coming in the mail, so if that copy sounds better than the previous upload, you can expect the same treatment to follow. In case you missed it the first time around, you can read more about the band here. Don’t let this one pass by!

Hang the Dance- Ghost Bloody Country LP

Posted in 1980s, 1988, goth-rock, hang the dance, post-punk, synth, uk on February 16, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

February seems to be a very post-punk month for Systems of Romance thus far. With that in mind here’s an excellent LP from the UK which I discovered in a local record bin for just a few dollars. A random purchase, selected on the strength of the cover and a quick turntable preview. Some awesome sounds here, reminiscent of Southern/Death Cult, but with clear, catchy synth lines on a handful of the tracks. Fans of bands such as Play Dead, Into A Circle, Snake Corps, and the Situation Two sound should really enjoy this one.

This appears to be the band’s only full length LP, though three singles were released around the same time. While there isn’t a lot of information about the band themselves, many gigographies include shows with the band over the years. Most notably, member Roman Remeynes sparked some controversy when calling in about the Ukranian John Peel Sessions performed by The Wedding Present. Fluent in Ukranian, Remeynes playfully stated that the band was ‘bastardizing the music.’ He was then invited to join in for the second peel session!

Here’s the info:

Last, but not least, here’s a higher bitrate copy of the Unreleased Vol. II compilation, featuring a slew of classic coldwave cuts, at the time very scarce. You have some excellent work by many of the bands featured here in the past, including Mary Goes Round, Neutral Project, Little Nemo, and Asylum Party. The Wallenberg track is also a favorite.

This Unreleased series contained three volumes, the first of which I haven’t heard, and the third which took a more classical/instrumental approach.

Ex Post Facto- Oceanic Explorers 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1982, ex post facto, goth-rock, post-punk, synth on November 18, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

For those not entirely thrilled with the idea of a Depeche Mode clone, here’s a request that should suit you well. This particular 12” has been posted before over at music…isms, but the author admittedly wasn’t able to provide the b-side at good quality. A shame, as I find the second track on this 1982 single to be the best of the three!

You can read more about this UK synth/post-punk hybrid and nab the rest of their work over at music…isms, so let’s just dive right in!

Black Sea- An Early Fall LP

Posted in 1990, 1990s, Black Sea, goth-rock, post-punk, rough trade on September 20, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

THREE new posts to kick off this new week, so bear with me, folks! The first hails from Black Sea, a US-based four piece post-punk band who releaed just one (appropriately titled) LP in 1990. The band formed in New Jersey and had a sound comparable with early Cure, The Lucy Show, The Church, etc. with a slightly harder edge. The LP was released on a small label, the local No. 6 Records, but distributed by Rough Trade, which no doubt earned the band a small cult following.  Wonder if they ever ran into Screaming For Emily, as both bands share similar sounds and hail from the same state…

Various sources allude to another released track, on a C’est La Morte compilation, but I can’t seem to confirm it for sure. Feel free to drop a line if anyone has any further information on these guys. That said, here’s the info for the LP:

Black Sea- An Early Fall LP
1. Washed Away
2. Immigrant Song
3. Hope
4. Mix
5. Killing Time
6. Darkest Days
7. Empty Fields
8. The River Runs Red

Track 2 is indeed a cover of the infamous Led Zeppelin track, but with a fresh new take! Enjoy, and stay tuned for more goodies! I have a bunch of new stuff in this vein (more guitar-driven) so coldwave/post-punk fans, rejoice!

Bildenzone- Autodafé LP

Posted in 1980s, 1988, Belgian, Bildenzone, coldwave, goth-rock, post-punk on July 26, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Taking a drastic turn for the second post today, with a little French post-punk LP from 1988. Expect some dark, thrashy tracks on this LP, mixed with the occasional dance groove for good measure. Lots of doom and gloom and guitar driven greatness to be found, so fans of Ziyo, Siekiera, and the darker side of La Vague Froide (coldwave) should feel right at home with this one.

Otherwise, there’s not a lot of info about this record floating around, as it’s the band’s only LP. If anyone can shed some more light on the band, feel free. With that in mind, have at it!

With tracks titles such as “Vampyre” and “Suicide Queen,” you can expect some witchy female vocals, thrashy guitar riffs, and other such gothic sounds, which should be right at home for fans of the genre.
