Mémoires d’Automne- Gloria Victis k7, s/t k7, compilation tracks

Posted in 1990s, 1993, 1995, coldwave, france, french, mémoires d'automne, post-punk on September 18, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

I normally prefer to spread things out more these days, but when it rains, it pours. Three great friends have just passed on some incredible coldwave tapes that I’m just itching to share, so the next three posts will feature their generous donations. First up, Stéphane has donated a rip of the two previously unshared Mémoires d’Automne tapes, 1993’s Gloria Victis and 1995’s self-titled cassette.  I’ve also included a series of compilation-only tracks, including some alternate and live versions of the tracks that appear here.  These tracks originally appeared across the Exterieur NuitL’Appel De La Muse (volume 5), and Looking For a Life to Lose compilations, and should complete the discography.  1996’s Cliché cassette will not be included here, partially because it has been uploaded elsewhere.  More importantly, a vinyl reissue of this seminal tape will be released in just a few weeks on Meidosem Records.  Click here for a preview and some pre-order details.

For those unfamiliar, Mémoires d’Automne were a three piece band from France, active in the 1990s and continuing the French/Belgian style of guitar-driven, melancholic post-punk.  Of course, any regular here should be well versed in this sound by now, but for any newcomers, this is highly recommended for fans of Nuit D’Octobre, Sombre Septembre, Odessa, Asylum Party, Lucie Cries, Formes Nouvelles, and more well known bands like And Also the Trees & early Cure.

There’s a lot of excellent material here, so best to get to it:

1. Le Secret
2. A La Gloire Des Vaincus
3. Fatalité
4. Open Scars

1. The Triumph of Time
2. Autumn Day

VA- L’Appel De La Muse, Vol. 5  (1995)
10. Fatalité

You can also find an alternate version of ‘Autumn Day’ (titled ‘Time of the End’) on 2007’s Ruines & Vanités compilation, which is still available to order online.  Thanks to Sorrow Vomit from Kentucky Fried Wave for donating the v/a tracks and again to Stéphane for the cassette rips!

Silently Down- SAD CD

Posted in 1980s, 1990s, 1992, coldwave, france, swiss, synth, synthpop with tags on May 5, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

Great hybrid of synthpop and coldwave sounds here on this CD from 1992, very much influenced by the Lively Art bands as well as Depeche Mode.   Not much out there about this one man band, as this disc was released without a label.  There’s a Myspace page out there, which pegs the project as hailing from both France and Switzerland, but I’m not sure of the whole story there.  Likely a French-born Swiss transplant, if I had to make a guess.

This is pretty much the entire recorded output of Silently Down.  Another track, “Tired to Life,” appears on the fourth volume of L’Appel De La Muse, but I’ve included it here for you all as well.   There’s also a track recorded with Ursula Nun of The Vyllies on Myspace, but since that site still throttles its quality, you’ll have to listen over there.

Track 2 is my favorite here, but they all tread very similar turf throughout.  Enjoy!

Silently Down- SAD CD
1. Days Go By
2. Reflection
3. Alone
4. La-Haut
5. Strange Times
6. Welcome To A Suicide Day

Bonus Track- ‘Tired To Life’

Babel 17- Shamanic Tales LP

Posted in 1990s, 1992, babel 17, coldwave, france, french, touching pop on February 28, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

Babel 17 were among the touching pop giants on the infamous Lively Art label (and one of my personal favorites of the era). The band released one full length LP and 10” EP before disbanding. A third record was recorded and was meant to be released in 1992, but Lively Art went bankrupt and folded, leaving the album in limbo.

…Until now!

End of Data REDUX

Posted in 1980s, 1984, 1985, coldwave, end of data, france, minimal synth, post-punk, synth on May 25, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Sorry for the delay, folks. Expecting a few goodies that haven’t arrived in the mail yet. Will get to ripping those and posting them ASAP. In the interim, I’ve been digging back through the vinyl collection and making improved rips of some of the albums I’ve posted in the past, and figured I’d share the improved fidelity with all of you.

What better band to start with, then End of Data. I’ve had mixed results with every copy I’ve come across. Quality issues, a few glaring skips, etc. However, I’ve come across great sounding copies of both LPs, so with better source material come greater results. Of course, there’s still minor crackle and a pop or two that just wouldn’t scrub out, but that’s what we love about vinyl, isn’t it?

These are two bona-fide classics, two all time favorites from France and beyond. I listen to these albums just about every week, no small feat for me! In case you missed these the first time around, you can read all about them here and here. Hope you all enjoy the improvements!

End of Data- Sahrah LP (1984)
1. End Of Data I & II
2. If I’m Not A Killer
3. Follow Me And So
4. Like A Succession I & II
5. Trottodaf
6. Sahrah / Symphonie Inachevée

6. Atttrra (Vers Le Miroir)

EDIT: to the 21 people who downloaded Dans Votre Monde when this post first appeared, please download the LP again— track 3 had an error in bouncing that has been rectified. Sorry for the trouble!

Quantom 1+3- Memoires Alchimiques K7

Posted in 1990s, 1993, coldwave, darkwave, ebm, france, french, k7 on April 8, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Cassettes, the final frontier. This particular tape has been on constant rotation over at SOR headquarters since receiving it on a generous loan. Not a lot of information on the web about this release, but there’s quite a bit of info on the cassette itself, so I’ll do my best to explain.

This particular cassette was released in 1993. The band were a three piece darkwave act from France (Axel Evigiran and the above pictured Lydia on vox and Orphee Hangiclist on guitar and programming) flirting with hints of EBM and coldwave. The sound should be right at home for fans of Babel 17, Neutral Project, Nagamatzu, and Peche Mortel (whose demos are some of the best treasures uncovered on the internet). Nice and dark, gritty, yet with catchy electronics permeating the mix.

While this is their first cassette, the band released two more tapes into the mid-90s. Perhaps those may see the light of day in time… For now though, enjoy this excellent slice of pure French coldwave.

Quantom 1+3- Memoires Alchimiques K7
1. Celeano
2. Post Mortem
3. Sombre Muse
4. V.I.T.R.I.O.L.
5. 7eme Cimetiere
6. I’ll Never Forget You
7. Pohjola Land
8. Bleuts
9. Puta Nostra
10. Narcisse
11. Rendez Vous
12. Nordeste Mystique
13. Dusang Sur Le Marbre
14. Venise Nocturne

Various Artists- Unreleased Vol. II LP

Posted in 1980s, asylum party, coldwave, france, goth-rock, little nemo, mary goes round, neutral project, post-punk, unreleased on December 4, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Last, but not least, here’s a higher bitrate copy of the Unreleased Vol. II compilation, featuring a slew of classic coldwave cuts, at the time very scarce. You have some excellent work by many of the bands featured here in the past, including Mary Goes Round, Neutral Project, Little Nemo, and Asylum Party. The Wallenberg track is also a favorite.

This Unreleased series contained three volumes, the first of which I haven’t heard, and the third which took a more classical/instrumental approach.

Various Artists- Unreleased Volume II
1. Little Nemo- My Eternal Friend (1st Way)
2. Mary Goes Round – The Nightmare
3. Via Valvag – Au Rythme Des Jours
4. The Wait – Moving In
5. Kindergarten – Machines’Co
6. Asylum Party – The Desert
7. Wallenberg – Someone’s Changing (Helen Part 1)
8. Neutral Project – Enigmatic Dream
9. Close Cover – The Bomb
10. Les Tétines Noires – Marônium

Quadrascope- Baby Won’t Phone 7”

Posted in 1980s, 7'', france, minimal synth, new wave, Quadrascope, synth, synthpop on October 12, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Last but not least, thanks to a generous donation, we have a killer synthpop/minimal 7” from Quadrascope, an obscure French band. Not much to be said about this 1983 release, as there’s not a lot of information available, so the music will have to speak for itself. While the a-side is a catchy wave number in its own right, the b-side is truly the gem here. Those handclaps slay me every time! I’ll let you decide for yourselves:

Quadrascope- Baby Won’t Phone 7”
1. Baby Won’t Phone
2. Love Times Love

Fatidic Seconde- Le Drakkar (Sidonie) 7”

Posted in 1980s, 1985, fatidic seconde, france, french, minimal synth, new wave, synth, synthpop on September 16, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Been dying to hear this one for quite some time, so a million thanks to bx59cppw for finally tracking it down. Killer French new wave hear, one of the best singles of the era, hailing from 1985. Both tracks are unstoppable, though the b-side has a more romantic edge.

The band released three more singles before disbanding in 1988. You can get the equally captivating Métropolis 7” over at Dreams and Voices. Without any further ado, here’s the info for this one:

Fatidic Seconde- Le Drakkar (Sidonie) 7”
1. Le Drakkar (Sidonie)
2. Le Chemin D’Un Rêve

Still have tons of goodies coming up, so expect a flurry of posts over the next few days!

Mary Goes Round- Sunset LP/CD

Posted in 1980s, 1989, 1990s, coldwave, france, french, lively art, mary goes round on April 29, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

A few years ago, I featured French psychedelic-tinged coldwave band Mary Goes Round’s second LP, the killer 70 Suns In the Sky. A few folks asked for their debut LP, but it must have slipped my mind for all these years, so this post will hopefully rectify this obvious oversight. As an added bonus, I’ve included the CD issue of Sunset, complete with five bonus tracks that follow the original 12” LP.

Interested parties can read up a bit more about the band here, if you missed the original post. Otherwise, here’s the info for this otherwise essential debut from one of the coldwave movement’s best bands:

Mary Goes Round- Sunset LP/CD
1. Mary Sleeps Alone
2. Dark Times
3. The Night
4. The Promised Land
5. The Great Desire
6. Sunset
7. Teardrops Again
8. The Nightmare
9. Mary In The Sky
10. On The Sea

Buzz- Kennedy / Marinetti / Sexe 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1986, 1987, 1988, Buzz, coldwave, france, minimal synth, synthpop on April 19, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a triple threat of 12” recordings by Buzz, an underrated, synth driven act from the heart of France. The band released their first cassette in 1985, soon signing with Danceteria records (A Wedding Anniversary/In the Nursery, etc.) The band released four 12” records over the course of the 1980s, splitting soon after. However, the band has since reactivated, re-releasing several older cuts and issuing new material during the latter half of this past decade.

I’ve included three of the band’s 12” records on Danceteria, leaving behind the 25th anniversary edition of “Kennedy,” the band’s best known track. For those who want a more complete snapshot of Buzz’s ’80s material, be sure to pick up their extremely limited CD compilation, entitled Buzz 1984 – 89. Not only does the compilation include superior quality versions of these recordings, it also tacks a few killer live tracks at the end. You can nab a copy here and listen the band’s new sounds via their myspace page. Without any further ado, here’s the details for these releases:

Buzz- Kennedy 12” (1986)
1. Kennedy
2. Picaso

Buzz- Marinetti 12” (1987)
1. Marinetti
2. Lo Sai
3. Marinetti (Extended Mix)

*My rip of this 12” has the more sparse intro to “Lo Sai” separated from the main track, most likely done for DJ purposes.

Buzz- Sexe 12”
1. Sexe
2. Berlin
3. 12 Inch Allah
4. Sexe (Fire Mix)
