End of Data REDUX

Posted in 1980s, 1984, 1985, coldwave, end of data, france, minimal synth, post-punk, synth on May 25, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Sorry for the delay, folks. Expecting a few goodies that haven’t arrived in the mail yet. Will get to ripping those and posting them ASAP. In the interim, I’ve been digging back through the vinyl collection and making improved rips of some of the albums I’ve posted in the past, and figured I’d share the improved fidelity with all of you.

What better band to start with, then End of Data. I’ve had mixed results with every copy I’ve come across. Quality issues, a few glaring skips, etc. However, I’ve come across great sounding copies of both LPs, so with better source material come greater results. Of course, there’s still minor crackle and a pop or two that just wouldn’t scrub out, but that’s what we love about vinyl, isn’t it?

These are two bona-fide classics, two all time favorites from France and beyond. I listen to these albums just about every week, no small feat for me! In case you missed these the first time around, you can read all about them here and here. Hope you all enjoy the improvements!

Bad Baby- S/T & The Second Coming LPs

Posted in 1980s, 1985, 1986, bad baby, darkwave, german, post-punk on March 14, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

So far in 2011, I’ve been focusing on more guitar driven bands. It seems as if most of the synthpop/minimal gems have been uncovered, leaving very few rarities left to scour these days, many of which just aren’t that great to begin with. That said, the early-to-mid 1980s were certainly a huge breeding ground for the post-punk sound, and I’m sure there’s a slew of LPs left to discover in this realm. This particular German band fits the mold perfectly- and their material is as solid as it is seldom known.

Uploaded here we have both LPs from Bad Baby, a four piece from Hamburg. Cold guitar wave galore across two full records, released almost back to back. I tend to prefer the self-titled debut, but still find lots to love about their second 12”, which is the more commonly found of the two. Not much development in sound across these releases, just solid gloomy treasures that should be perfect for fans of Snake Corps, Blue In Heaven, Choir Invisible, Modern Eon etc. Googling this band is difficult, as little information can be found admist all the child-rearing tips and tricks out there. With that in mind, let’s get down to business:

Bad Baby- Bad Baby LP (1985)
1. A Dream Within a Dream
2. Broken-Hearted
3. Salvation Army
4. Promenade
5. Glasshouses
6. Mont Blanc
7. (Out of the Frying Pan) Into the Fire
8. Cry Baby Cry*

*Originally by The Beatles.

Bad Baby- The Second Scene LP (1986)
1. Twilight
2. Slow Down
3. Sleeping Hell
4. Blank Devotion
5. Alone
6. Sublime

The Instigators- We Don’t Know What We Want 7”

Posted in 1980s, 1985, new wave, post-punk, the instigators, US on February 25, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a rare US entry to the new wave scene with a 2 track 7” from 1985. A complete obscurity, with nothing to be found on the internet or elsewhere. The a-side is a great guitar driven track with a few great synth hooks in tow. Almost sounds as if R.E.M. ditched the American underground and went for a more European aesthetic. It also kind of reminds me of the VHF LP, for those who enjoyed that particularly rare gem. A little gloom, but catchy all the same.

The b-side is far less interesting to me, with a more happy-go-lucky melody that recalls The Kinks, but different strokes for different folks. I’ll leave it for you all to decide.

The Instigators- We Don’t Know What We Want 7”
1. We Don’t Know What We Want

Perfect Jewish Couple- Ménage À Trois 7”

Posted in 1980s, 1985, minimal, minimal synth, perfect jewish couple, US on January 21, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s another oddball minimal synth gem I’ve had sitting in the upload queue for some time now. A rare entry from the United States, Ohio to be exact, dating back to 1985. You have two mixes of the catchy and quirky single here, backed with a more atmospheric track on the flip. I personally prefer the b-side, but especially enjoy the duality of this release.

You can hear more from the band on a 2007 CD reissue, which features some unreleased gems and “The Fall.” This release was prompted by several inquiries from fans and collectors over the years. Read more about the band’s history (complete with a comprensive bio and gear-list) here, and be sure to pick up a copy of Time Capsule by clicking here!

Dorian Gray- Promise of Love 7”

Posted in 1980s, 1985, dorian gray, post-punk, uk on January 13, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Picked this 7” from 1985 up at one of my favorite NYC record shops, the newly unveiled Heaven Street Records in Greenpoint. Bears no relation to either the Dorian Gray posted here, or the Dorian Grey posted here, though both are worth checking out as well. Seems to be a popular name for those in the pre-Google age!

What we have here are two tracks from the UK wave scene that strike a balance between Into a Circle and Crocodiles-era Echo and the Bunnymen. Not shocking to hear the band once supported Gene Loves Jezebel, as there’s a melodic post-punk vibe running through this single. The b-side is a more percussive and groove-oriented remix of the title track, for those who appreciate that sort of thing. Dig it:

2. Miles Away

There’s another 12” from 1986 out there, priced a little higher than this 7”. Hope to snag and share that one sometime soon, so stay tuned. There’s also a video for ‘Promise of Love’ kicking around on YouTube, linked for your viewing pleasure:

Alan Shearer- Dark Is the Color LP

Posted in 1980s, 1985, alan shearer, french, instrumental, synthpop on January 4, 2011 by Frankie Teardrop

Sorry for the onslaught of posts, folks! Got ants in the pants, I guess- lots of cool things I’m excited about posting in the new year. This one was just sent to me this morning by Mr. BX, and since I’ve been dying to hear it for some time, I figured some of you might be anxious to hear it as well.

Contained within we have the first LP from French musician Alan Shearer, released in 1985. I included the final track on this LP in the recent Systems of Romance compilation post, so some of you may already be familiar with this album’s general vibe. You can expect more of the same instrumental synth grooves here, some more melodic and ambient than others. Reminds me of a cross between Tangerine Dream and some of John Carpenter’s more dancefloor electronic tracks. Definitely an interesting listen!

Alan Shearer- Dark Is the Color LP
1. The Heart Patrol
2. Dark Is The Color
3. Generation V
4. Chronomaster
5. Nocturnal March
6. The Flea Age
7. Tropical Terminal
8. Only For One Girl

Mad Matrix- Men Alone 7”

Posted in 1985, Belgian, disco, italo, italo disco, mad matrix, synthpop on December 13, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a classic disco cut for fans of the genre. Belgian disco with italo leanings, released in 1985. Naturally, several versions of the a-side track exist. The 7” edit is present here, alongside an exclusive b-side not on any of the other singles. For those who can’t get enough of this jam, you can get the 12” extended mix (special club version) by clicking here. Beware the downtuned synth lines! Definitely a killer track in any incarnation.

Nemesy- Nemesy LP

Posted in 1985, italo, italo disco, nemesy on October 25, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Up on the slab today is an underrated classic italo LP by Nemesy, released in 1985. As with most italo projects, I can’t seem to dig up any concrete information about the parties involved, except that there seems to be three main contributors, judging from album artwork and scattered credits. Paolo Bocchi (Passengers, F.A.S., David Gray) was also involved with the mixing process for this LP.

Expect some fantastic glossy hooks here, smooth female vocals, killer instrumentals, and everything else you’d expect from an essential italo LP. Both versions of ‘Arabian Sacrifice’ are among the standouts, as well as ‘I Wanna Dance’ and ’24 Hours, two singles released before the LP. Here’s the details:

Nemesy- Nemesy LP
1. 24 Hours
2. Touch
3. Arabian Sacrifice (Sacrifice Version)
4. You Can, You Can
5. We Play The Music
6. Arabian Sacrifice (Arabian Version)
7. I Wanna Dance

Fatidic Seconde- Le Drakkar (Sidonie) 7”

Posted in 1980s, 1985, fatidic seconde, france, french, minimal synth, new wave, synth, synthpop on September 16, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Been dying to hear this one for quite some time, so a million thanks to bx59cppw for finally tracking it down. Killer French new wave hear, one of the best singles of the era, hailing from 1985. Both tracks are unstoppable, though the b-side has a more romantic edge.

The band released three more singles before disbanding in 1988. You can get the equally captivating Métropolis 7” over at Dreams and Voices. Without any further ado, here’s the info for this one:

Fatidic Seconde- Le Drakkar (Sidonie) 7”

Troubled Gardens- Eden Revisited 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1985, coldwave, post-punk, Troubled Gardens, US on August 27, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Just found a sealed (!) copy of this killer 12” for super cheap, so figured I’d share it for you all. I can’t seem to find a ton of information about Troubled Gardens, but expect some heavy bass grooves, Chameleons-esque guitars, and driving post-punk vibes from this US band. Three of the songs here are vocal ragers, while the other three are more dub-inspired jams.

This 12” was released in 1985 by Fountain of Youth records, home to bands like The Crippled Pilgrims, Government Issue, and The Velvet Monkeys. This is one of their final releases. Here’s the information:

Troubled Gardens- Eden Revisited 12”
1. Voice Carryovers
2. Incredible Changing Dub
3. Silent City
4. Domination Dub
5. Hour Of The Sun
6. Spy Dub
