Celibates- A Shameless Fashion LP
Some of you may have seen this one kicking around previously over at Capa Nostra Syndicate, but I believe there may be a skip or two on that particular upload. So apologies for the repetition, but here’s a freshly ripped version of this quirky minimal synth/post-punk hybrid from 1981.
This particular LP actually serves as a nice companion to the VHF lp. Quirky synths, minimal beats, and a strange connection to bands like Devo, Voice Farm, and Futurisk. Of course, there’s a few duds along the way, but I especially am fond the first track. Minimal synth fans should recognize David Kane, one of the album’s main contributors. Better known as Quintronic, he’s the man responsible for the Trek w/ Quintronic LPs, which you can get over at Mutant Sounds. Kane was responsible for the electronic elements of the LP, while Kent Weber (of the Fems), played all guitars and effects. Terry Sullivan, the vocalist, has no other releases as far as I can tell.

Thank you very much for this very rare synthie-pop lp from the early 80ies. I heard it first and last time in 1982 at a friend. He sold the vinyl and i was searching the celibates since than. Now I finally found it and it brings me back my youth!

Terry Sullivan does have other releases that I know of. In the 90's he put out a couple cds with his band Terry and the Headhunters who played more bluesy work ala Stones. Also comparable to Black Crowes but he was, as always, ahead of his time, doing it before the Robinsons I believe.
David Kane has an impressive body of work especially of interest to you may be Nullstadt – one lp, Zero City? and a cassette release. One of my favorites of which he has several releases is Them Jazzbeards. Also Decline of Western Civilization – an ep. I left Buffalo in 1994 but I know he has continued to produce varied and cutting edge work since then.

Thank you so much! I have been looking for this albums for decades! Saw them live at The Continental regularly back in the day. My sister and I are beside ourselves with this find! Big thanks to Frankie for posting this one. This is what led me to this blog. I also had searched for years for it. All I had was a dusty old home cassette.
We used to see The Celibates in a run-down bar called McVan's. What a novelty it was seeing a synth-driven band that early on, with just two musicians and a vocalist! It would be many months before "A Shameless Fashion" was issued.
I was always a fan of keyboardist David Kane, but nothing subsequent ever captured the magic and excitement of those early live performances in that dingy, decaying old bar, including the album itself.

I corresponded with him a bit. Apparently the song "Mr. Completely" was composed as a Celibates number and was earmarked for the second album.

I searched for “Girls With Headphones” for 20 years until today! Can’t believe I found it! I use to listen to this song on college radio (WCSB or WRUW) in Cleveland, Ohio as a young teen! It is truly INCREDIBLE that I found this lost treasure! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING!! Damn, the internet is the BEST invention ever!

Terry Sullivan was also the vocalist in seminal punk/power pop band The Jumpers. Recorded two singles circa ’78-79

Cool stuff. And I thought I was the only one who re-ripped LPs I felt could sound better. This is definitely an improvement over the old 192 rip.

Yeah, I used to think 192 was good enough for people to grab and re-rip if you like…but then I got better at click removal, and figured I’d archive everything properly god forbid my actual copy get destroyed. Glad you appreciate it!
